STUDENT COMPETITION (basic and applied areas)

Undergraduate, master or PhD students may participate in the SBTE student competition. The data presented in the abstract must be original, non-submitted elsewhere and produced by the student. The format must comply with SBTE’s guidelines for abstract and poster preparation.

The competitors will be classified based on the “evaluation criteria for the SBTE student competition”, which takes into consideration the quality of the abstract. Eight competitors per area (basic science and applied science) will be selected for an oral presentation of the poster during the poster session. Then, the best four candidates will be selected as finalists to present their studies orally during the Student Competition Session of the Scientific Program (10-12 min, 3 min for questions). The competitors will be evaluated by professionals designated by the SBTE Scientific Committee having recognized expertise in the field and no conflicts of interest with the participants.

General guidelines for student competition award:

The first author must be a student. The accepted description of this credit is contingent upon submission of a document proving the registration of the first author at the undergraduate or graduate. Masters and PhDs that defended their thesis in 2019 are allowed to participate in the student competition. However, they must be the first author of the abstract and provide a document proving the date of defense in 2019.

Among all candidates, eight (8) students per area (basic sciences and applied sciences) will be preselected to present their poster to the selection committee during the poster session. Authors must be present by their posters for presentation. The absence of the first author will lead to the elimination from the competition.

After the poster session, four (4) students per area will be indicated by the evaluators as finalists for oral presentation during the XXXIII SBTE Annual Meeting scientific program. The oral presentation must take from 10 to 12 min, and will be followed by questions from the audience and judging committee for up to 3 additional min.

The winners will be selected based on the scientific quality of the abstract and performance during the poster and oral presentations. Awards (certificates) will be conferred to the 1stplace.

Registration for “Best Research in Basic Science” or “Best Research in Applied Science” is not linked to the “Student Competition”. Therefore, student or professional first authors may register for this competition.

The award for “Best Field or Practitioner’s Work (Best Technical Report)” has the objective to honor the competence, the casuistic and the power of observation of practitioners and colleagues working in the field or in the laboratory, outside universities or research institutions. Thus, the abstracts registered in this competition must NOT contain researchers linked to universities or research institutions as co-authors.

Eight (8) preselected studies based on the quality of the abstract will be evaluated by the judging committee during the Poster Session. The absence of the first author during the Poster Session will lead to the elimination from the competition.

The final classification will be based on the quality of the abstract, as well as poster format/quality and performance during the poster presentation. Only one award (1st place) will be given to each category.
